When I’ve Had a Bad Day…

 photo DSC_0050.jpg

Yesterday was a really bad day.  It is not often that I allow myself to have a bad day.  I honestly try to see the positive in every situation.  Yesterday, though, it was really, really hard to see the positive. I gave myself a day to wallow in self-pity, pledging that today, I would start fresh, new, and ready to face any challenges ahead.

When I woke up bright and early this morning, the first thing that I did was make my tea, open my computer, and start looking at pictures of our trip to the farm.

It did not take me long to realize how blessed I am.

Yes, I had a bad day, but I have had many, many more good ones.

I have amazing children who love to play, laugh, smile, and be adventurous.

I have a wonderful husband who is my rock, and who makes me laugh every single day.

I have the best parents in the world who have always taught me that there is a reason for all things and that when God closes one door, He opens another one.  Those words of wisdom have helped me so many times.

I have an amazing sister, one who says such sweet things about me that she makes me want to live up to her words every day.

I have nieces who let me act 25, even though I am a few years beyond that.  I went shopping with them and laughed so hard that my abs hurt.

It was an amazing week on the farm.  Even more than that, though, was the fact that it gave me memories that speak volumes. Memories that shine much brighter and louder than one silly bad day.

Summer of Fun 2013: Go on a Hike (Big Bend National Park)

 photo IMG_1377.jpg

When we were planning our Summer Fun List, I knew that Sean and Gabriel had a special trip planned.

 photo IMG_1094.jpg

Once or twice per year, they take a little trip with two other dads and their sons.

 photo IMG_1378.jpg

We have known them all since Gabriel was in Kindergarten, and we have been blessed with some wonderful family friendships.

 photo IMG_1383.jpg

This year, they decided to take a trip to Big Bend National Park.

As an added bonus, they swam in the Rio Grande River and enjoyed a little touch of Mexico.

The boys were so excited that even the 8 hour drive did not deter the excitement.

 photo IMG_1095.jpg

I stayed home and had special time with Summer and Ethan,

while Sean and Gabriel made memories that will last a lifetime.

I had no idea how much I could possibly miss them until there was no telephone reception the first night.  By the time I heard their voices the next morning, it felt like I had not talked to them in a week.  Poor Ethan was so sad, as he choked out “Bubba” through tears.

 photo IMG_1379.jpg

I was so happy that they were able to take a special trip to a special place….but I was even happier once we were all reunited as a family.

Summer of Fun 2013: Attend a June Wedding

 photo DSC_0006.jpg

There is something magical about weddings.  I cannot hear the wedding march without tears immediately appearing in my eyes.

 photo DSC_0008.jpg

Watching two people begin a new life together is simply beautiful.

 photo DSC_0057.jpg

Knowing how much they deserve happiness and watching them embrace it is just priceless.

 photo 102_5298.jpg

Seeing it unfold in a magical June wedding was just beyond perfect.

Our cousin married a wonderful man this weekend.

 photo IMG_1261.jpg

We would have been happy for her, regardless of the circumstances.  Her story just made us even happier.

Christy lost her first husband a few years ago.  She was left a widow and a single mom.  Within two years, she lost her husband, her brother, her father, and her grandmother.  We watched her handle it all with a strength and grace for which she never gives herself enough credit.

Her mother-in-law said it best on Friday.  She said, “Christy went so long without smiling that I never thought that I would see her smile again.”

This weekend, we saw her smile.

This weekend, we saw two families united as one.

This weekend, we witnessed pure happiness.

Attend a June wedding was absolutely on the summer fun list.  There is simply nothing better than family.  Throw in a wedding, and the joy goes up about a thousand notches.

Summer attended her first wedding and loved everything about it.

We are so happy for Christy, Jimmy, and their children.  We believe that there is nothing more special than pledging your love to someone, and we feel so blessed that we were there to witness Christy’s beautiful smile, the one that we did not see for so long.
