Seven years ago today, at 10:16 am, my little 6 pound 1 ounce Ethan made his way into the world. He was so tiny. He was so, so loved. And, he still is.
Gabriel was the first one to meet him. Gabriel was only 18 months old, and he was so thrilled to have a little brother. Honestly. Gabriel, at 18 months, was beyond his years. He loved Ethan from the moment he was born. And, he still does.
Summer was born 2 1/2 years later. Gabriel was the first one to meet her. Ethan was the second. While he was not too sure what the big deal was, he loved her. He gave her hugs and kisses. And, he still does.
So, today, we celebrated. We broke some eating rules…and, we did not feel bad about it. We have been good for 2 months, and we decided to take a day to let our birthday boy know that he could have whatever he wanted. It is his day, and we wanted him to feel as special as he is. Although, I wonder if he will ever really know how special he truly is…I am not sure if that is something that any child can grasp. If there is one thing that I want him to know. It is that. I want him to know how magical he is, how the world lights up because he is in it, how much he is loved by family, by friends, by teachers, really by anyone who has ever had the honor to meet him. Yes, he is that special.
We started the day with singing…and then with doughnuts. We got the smile…the really big smile…when he saw the 7 doughnuts made into a 7 with a 7 candle. He patiently waited until we finished singing…again…and then he blew that candle out. The doughnut that he chose to eat first…the one that had the 7 candle in it, of course. Because, that was the special one.
Then, we opened presents. And, yes, we got the smiles with the laughter. He had presents from us, presents from his aunt, uncle, and cousins next door, and presents that were sent to him from family that I have been stashing away in the closet so that he could open them all at once. Our little Angry Bird fanatic received some very cool Angry Bird things, cards, money, a stuffed alligator, a helicopter, a book, a Cars Lego set, a little bug toy, and a lot of birthday wishes. Oh, how he loves opening presents.
It is these moments that I cherish…and not just because it is a birthday… but because there were days when we wondered if something as simple, yet as grand, as a birthday would really mean the same thing to him as it does to our other two. As with most worries, I wasted time worrying about that for nothing. Our middle little knows how to celebrate his birthday. He was up earlier than normal, with a smile on his face, just waiting for those birthday wishes. Follow that with the special meals, the presents, the special Angry Bird cookie cake, the phone calls, and the extra hugs and love, and my little boy had a day fit for, well, fit for a little boy who holds sunshine in his smile, magic in his laughter, and us in the palm of his hands.
Happy 7th Birthday, Ethan. Thank you for blessing our lives, spreading your magic, and bringing us so much joy every day. I love you to the moon and back!
